Celebration

May 31 was my first anniversary of blogging! The year has flown by, and I've learned so much from you, my fellow bloggers. I always tell my friends who are oblivious to blogging that each morning I sit down and travel the world, seeing pictures, stories and sharing in joys of my blogging friends.  So that is the GOOD for today!

RANDOM:

Fbg LogoI met with a lady yesterday who would like for me to join the board of the local Habitat for Humanity. But in our discussion, she would really like for me to set up and take over their accounting as well. Hmmm. Have to think about that. My first step will be to find out just how much work is involved, meeting with the current treasurer who has had the job for a long time. Then I'll see. With my CPA background and computer knowledge, this comes up more often than I can tell you. What do you think?

FUN
We are busy sorting, packing, and giving away all of our stuff for the move. We signed paperwork yesterday to set the closing date on the house, and our builder tells us that he will have the inside completely finished in two weeks. We can't move in until after the closing on June 23rd....that's just three weeks away!

Joining in with Good Random Fun today, Monday June 1st!

Linda Kay

Sounds to me they are looking for someone who would commit themselves completely and of course that would be you. Do you have the time to commit completely because you know full well, only a "HANDFUL' of people really run any boards. Its that handful of committed people that do all the work and handle everything. If you have the time, then go for it. You obviously have the talent, and the dedication, but do you really know how much work is involved. My own past experiences tell me there's a lot more work than they ever talk about, but Linda, once settled in your new home, you may have more time so think on that too. I wish you much happiness in your new home and HAPPY FIRST ANNIVERSARY.

Here's to a year, cheers!
Wait, you consider sorting and packing fun? I think you could start your own charity around that.
Joining the board for Habitat would be a great thing. Yes, they'd probably put you to work, utilizing your skills pro bono, but if you have the time, what a great way to support a great cause. You wouldn't have to do it forever (most board members last a 2 year cycle in non-profit land) and imagine the bragging rights!

Seems like a good cause, so it's worth considering IMO.

hooray for the home closing coming up! as for the habitat bookkeeping, glad you're researching it. i'm assuming you wouldn't take it on until after you're officially moved.

You are so wise to approach volunteering carefully and asking LOTS of questions. We tend to idealize it sometimes, and it can be more demanding and less rewarding than work!

Habitat for Humanity is a worthy cause; but it's right for you to assess what sort of obligation this requires.

Sounds like your a busy girl. I wish you well with both endeavors.
I agree that any part of a non profit board can be extremely busy and challenging. You just have decide if your up for the challenge(s).
I can only tell you in my experience managing a non profit was the most exciting time of my life. I have volunteered in lots of different ways through the years. As I am sure your have. I'll be praying for you.
Good luck with the house.
Thanks for coming by! Have a good week.

Only one year old! Wow! I had the impression you'd been doing it for years. Congrats.

Knowing how big the habitat organization is here in St. Louis, they build 50 to 60 houses a year, I would think they need several full time accounting people here. So the question is, how big is your habitat group.

Both the blog anniversary and the move are awfully important. You have picked up a lot of readers here, and I bet you will find wonderful friends near your new home.

Happy Blogaversary!!! Here's to many more! Here's too your new home being finished and you moving in and loving it too!!! I hope that the packing goes well, it is a big task, but it is good that you have plenty of time to do it. I hope that your volunteering goes well, based on my own experience, if you are unsure, say so and just remember to do what you want to do, as although you of course want to do a good job for them, you are a volunteer. I hope that you enjoy it most of all. xx

Happy first blogaversary! I would ask many more questions before becoming an accountant/treasurer for any non profit. When was their last audit would be my first question. Around here once you are on a Board you have to practically die before you are off the board:)

Happy Bloggaversary! I love being able to tell people about my friend in Wales and my friends in Australia and Canada and my friends all over the U.S. I hate to be unkind, but it seems as if organizations want to use you. I understand. I am asked to join things when the group wants to have a newsletter or write some advertising. I keep my head down unless it's something that moves me to the point that I want to participate.

Love,
Janie
